I remember a student of mine when he came to us he used to sit quietly. I will teach him , give him work to do, he will do it silently and go home. He will not utter a singe word. He never used to talk to anyone. When I ask him to read, he used to read very slowly.
One day we had a party. Its in our curriculum, we in the gap of month or two have some refreshing day with students. On that day we talk, play have fun with students so that they open up with us. After that day he started playing with me and in that playing time of him I started teaching him taking examples of surrounding things. I stopped making targets for him, I just made sure that before leaving he at least learn 5 new words to read and spell.Gradually the things got changed, one day he came to me and read the whole chapter aloud, the happiness on his face was priceless.
That was a turning day for him. I can’t say he has become a brilliant student, but he has started working for it. He himself brings his pending works, he completes his homework. He studies for his unit tests and many more. And the most important part, he has become one of the most loving student. He talks with everyone now and that too in English.
The moral of the story is Each and every child can do, but if we make him sit and ask them to learn question and answers and set a daily target , they will not like it most of the times. Stop setting targets for them, let them do in their comfortable zone and time at least till grade 8. let them enjoy studying instead of all the time being on their head.
This is the time they explore so many things , give them that space , that me time when they learn. Just getting good marks in exam, after memorizing everything is not what they are made for. They are way better than us. Mark sheets are not something they look up to. Let them be knowledgeable not just a mere marks holder. That can only be done when they love to learn and read. So please start motivating them, instead of all the time pressurizing.
